A prisoner, Ross Ulbricht, has seen his NFT become one of the top-selling digital tokens of the last seven days.
One of the perks of the crypto industry is that it provides everybody regardless of their age, gender, position and even location an equal opportunity to make a mark on society.
It is this ubiquitous opportunity that has been seized by Ross Ulbricht, the jailed founder of the Silk Road, to not only create an NFT, but also see to the sale of this project in record fees and time.
Per available details, his “Genesis Collection” NFT project has recorded its first sale for 1446 ETH which is roughly equivalent to over $6 million dollar as of press time.
Ross Ulbricht’s NFT was auctioned at the Art Basel Miami via the NFT marketplace SuperRare and, unsurprisingly, the digital token winning bid was from FreeRossDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization that is pushing for the freedom of the creator.
The sold NFT, tagged “Perspective,” was drawn in prison and it represents just one out of the Genesis collection consisting of 10-pieces he had created throughout his life. Interestingly, part of the collection is an animated video by Levitate which is accompanied by Ulbricht’s voice describing his time in prison.
Data from NonFungible has shown that Ulbricht’s NFT sale ranks as one of the most expensive sales recorded in the market within the last seven days.
Born as Ross William Ulbricht nearly four decades ago in America. Ulbricht is widely regarded as the creator and operator of the popular darknet market website Silk Road which specialized in facilitating the sale of narcotics and other illicit trades using Bitcoin.
In 2015, an American court sentenced him to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit money laundering, hacking, fraudulent identity documents trafficking, and conspiracy for narcotics trafficking via the Internet.
Since then, he has become one of the most popular persons incarcerated in the US and he has made several attempts to regain his freedom. Towards the end of President Trump’s tenure, it was rumored that the famed prisoner could gain clemency from the US government. However, that did not come to fruition.
He maintains a social media account with close to 100k followers on Twitter and the FreeRossDAO website states that it is committed to sharing Ross’s work while also advancing prison reforms.
