Key Insights

  • As per rumors, Elon Musk may have joined the Bored Ape Yacht Club
  • Musk had previously called out the Twitter management team on the rising number of bots and scammers related to NFTs and cryptocurrencies
  • BAYC holders include names like Eminem, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Curry, Mark Cuban, and many more

Tesla Chief might once again be playing his cards slyly. According to a renowned NFT collector, the top-tier Bored Ape non-fungible token (NFT) piece, under the number 1,837, has been sold to an anonymous buyer.

Reportedly, the buyer spent close to 600 Ethereum on the NFT buy. What’s the catch here, though? This anonymous buyer could be Tesla founder Elon Musk.

Musk’s Newfound Love?

While Musk has been an ardent supporter of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in general, the tech tycoon has caused considerable upturns in the market. Musk’s love for meme tokens has been common knowledge now, much like his annoyance with NFTs.

Just last month, the billionaire expressed his annoyance over the new Twitter feature that lets premium users flaunt their NFT purchases as their profile picture.

Musk commented on Twitter’s new feature for Twitter Blue users saying ‘this is annoying’ with a screenshot of Twitter’s announcement. He added that the social media giant doesn’t seem to be spending its resources well.

On February 25, in an exciting turn of events, pseudonymous NFT collector Deepak.eth pointed out on Twitter that the Bored Ape NFT, under the number 1,837, has been sold to an anonymous buyer. The same was also highlighted by Crypto Reporter, Colin Wu.

Previously, Deepak was selling the piece for 690.420 ETH, widely known as ‘meme numbers’ that are often used by Musk in his tweets. However, later on, he lowered the price for the piece to 569, most likely to sell it quicker.

The seller Tweeted, “I thought I had it at 690.420 ETH. Oh well.. as long as it goes to ElonMusk, I’ll be happy.” the seller tweeted. Reportedly the NFT has been sold to a buyer on moonpay-eth.

At the same time, reports allege that Musk could have directly or indirectly bought the NFT. However, there has been no official confirmation from Musk’s side.

Bored Ape Still Not Boring for Celebs

Bored Apes, a Yuga Labs’ Ethereum-based NFT project, has yielded more than $2 billion in secondary trading volume across three collections.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is considered an exclusive social group for NFT holders, including several celebrity owners, like Eminem, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Curry, and Mark Cuban.

More recently, Canadian musician Justin Bieber updated his Instagram with a post of a Bored Ape NFT. Bieber bought the NFT for $1.29 million. The BAYC NFT collection was launched on April 30, 2021, and in just eight months, they have become the second-highest most traded NFTs.

That said, the rumors that Elon Musk too could be a member of the Bored Ape Yacht Club seems like a leap too far, for now, considering the entrepreneur’s disapproval of NFTs and Web3.

Recently, Musk took a jibe at Web3, saying that ‘Web3 sounds like bs’ and that it’s ‘more marketing buzzword than reality right now.’
