Foreign trade accounts for approximately 70 percent of the Belgium's economy. About 80% of Belgium's trade is with fellow EU member states. Belgium's trade surplus soared to a record high of EUR 5609.6 million in July 2024, from EUR 2242.3 million in the corresponding period of the previous year, preliminary estimates showed. Imports fell by 4.2% to EUR 38278.2 million, with declines seen both from inside and outside the European Union (-4.1% and -4.2%, respectively). Moreover, exports rose by 4% to EUR 43887.8 million, driven by a sharp rise in shipments outside the EU (+13.8%), while sales to EU countries declined by 0.6%.
