Foreign trade accounts for approximately 70 percent of the Belgium's economy. About 80% of Belgium's trade is with fellow EU member states. Belgium's trade surplus widened to EUR 1504.5 million in August 2024, from EUR 975 million in the corresponding period of the previous year, preliminary estimates showed. Imports tumbled by 9.9% to EUR 36174.8 million, with declines seen both from inside and outside the European Union (-11.2% and -7.1%, respectively). At the same time, exports dropped by 8.4% to EUR 37679.3 million, with sales to EU countries falling by 8.3%, while Extra-EU shipments declined by 8.5%.
