The Netherlands is an export-oriented economy and derives more than two-thirds of its GDP from the merchandise trade. Main exports are: machinery and transport equipment (28 percent of total exports), mineral fuels (23 percent), food (11 percent), clothing and footwear (10 percent) and pharmaceuticals (5 percent). Netherlands main imports are: fuel (29 percent of total imports), machinery (26 percent) and food and live animals (8.6 percent). Main trading partners are Germany (24 percent of total exports and 17 percent of imports) and Belgium (12 percent of exports and 10 percent imports). Others include: China, France, United Kingdom and United States.

The trade surplus in the Netherlands narrowed to EUR 14.1 billion in September 2024, down from EUR 15.1 billion in the same month of the previous year. Exports fell 1.6% year-on-year to EUR 70.5 billion, with sales to EU countries declining by 2.9%, while exports to non-EU countries rose by 0.2%. Among commodities, exports saw significant declines in mineral fuels and lubricants (-21.8%) and machines and transport equipment (-2.6%). In contrast, imports rose by 0.2% to EUR 56.3 billion, as higher purchases from non-EU countries (1.4%) more than offset a 1.1% drop in imports from EU countries. Imports rose particularly for food and live animals (11.9%) and chemicals (10.5%), though these gains were offset by a sharp decline in mineral fuels and lubricants (-20.4%). From January to September, the trade surplus widened to EUR 113.2 billion, up from EUR 96.9 billion in the same period last year.
