The number of payrolled employees in the United Kingdom increased by 21 thousand, or 0.1% to 30.4 million in January 2025, following a revised 14 thousand decline in the previous month. Compared to the same month last year, payrolled employment remained broadly stable, rising by just 49 thousand. The largest annual increase in employment was observed in the health and social work sector (+92 thousand), while the accommodation and food service activities sector experienced the biggest drop (-58 thousand). Across regions, the highest annual growth in payrolled employment was recorded in the Orkney Islands (2.8%), whereas Westminster saw the largest decline (-2.3%). Meanwhile, the median monthly pay rose by 5.7% year-on-year to £2,467. The accommodation and food service activities sector posted the highest pay growth (10.4%), while the finance and insurance sector saw the smallest increase (2.9%).
