The number of payrolled employees in the United Kingdom declined by 78 thousand, or 0.3%, to 30.3 million in March 2025, marking the largest monthly drop since May 2020. This followed a revised 8 thousand fall in the previous month. Compared to the same month last year, payrolled employment decreased by 0.2% or 70 thousand, with the sharpest drop recorded in the accommodation and food service activities sector (-92 thousand). Across regions, Westminster saw the largest decline in payrolled employees (-2.6%), while Causeway Coast and Glens recorded the highest increase (3.4%). Meanwhile, the median monthly pay grew by 4.8% year-on-year to £2,469. Annual growth in median pay was the highest in accommodation and food service activities sector (7.5%), while the lowest was in the public administration and defence sector (1.6%).
