    Our Take on Blueberry

Launched in 2016 and based in North Sydney, Blueberry has carved out a niche among Australia’s highly competitive forex and CFD providers. Clients can access trading in forex, indices, commodities, shares, and crypto via the MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms.

Blueberry excels with rock-bottom fees, a diverse range of tradable instruments, and reliable customer support. I was also impressed by the VIP trading room, which provides trading ideas and direct consultation with seasoned in-house analysts.

With micro lot trading, demo accounts, and a rich library of educational materials, Blueberry is a beginner-friendly broker. At the same time, low trading costs, advanced platforms, and tools like VPS hosting make it suitable for experienced traders.

    Blueberry Pros and Cons

    Pros Cons
    • Tight spreads
    • Excellent range of crypto pairs
    • 24/7 Support
    • Copy trading via Duplitrade
    • Raw spreads account
    • No inactivity/maintenance fees
    • VIP trading room
    • Strong educational materials

    • Out-of-date analysis on the website

    Who is Blueberry For?

When reviewing a broker, we assess its suitability for implementing various trading strategies. To achieve this, we evaluate the availability of features and tools necessary for executing specific strategies. Here is our verdict for Blueberry:

    Beginners: Perfect Match

Blueberry has many qualities that may suit beginners. These include low-risk micro-lot trading, strong educational materials, responsive support, and demo accounts. While the MetaTrader desktop platforms are not highly intuitive, the MT5 web platform is well-designed and more straightforward.

    Copy Trading: Perfect Match

Blueberry clients can copy trade via the DupliTrade. This platform does better than the average by only listing carefully audited traders. All accounts available for copying are the real accounts of traders with years of proven track records trading with real money.

    Swing Trading: Acceptable Choice

Blueberry offers an excellent range of markets for swing trading, including over 1,100 shares from diverse global exchanges. Overnight swap fees are average for the industry. However, real shares and ETFs are not available.

    Day Trading: Perfect Match

MetaTrader 4 and 5 provide one-click trading and trading from the chart, essential features for active traders who are in and out of the market throughout the day. Spreads are also highly competitive in most asset classes, making it easier for traders to reach profitability. The VIP trading room is a great source of ideas for day traders.

    Scalping: Perfect Match

Scalpers, who are in and out of the market within seconds, can benefit from fast order execution and tools like depth-of-market (DOM) in MetaTrader 5. The VPS hosting at Blueberry also benefits scalpers with 24/7 uptime and ultra-fast trade execution of 1-3 ms or less.

    News Trading: Acceptable Choice

Clients can access a built-in economic calendar in MT5, helping traders stay on top of news without leaving the platform. Blueberry could do better by adding more analysis of economic events and real time news, like a feed from Reuters or Dow Jones.

    Automated Trading: Perfect Match

Blueberry offers MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms, which enable strategy backtesting and automated trading via expert advisors (EAs). Clients can also benefit from VPS hosting, which maximizes trade execution speed and protects against power and internet outages.

Blueberry offers managed accounts to clients who have been referred by a fund manager. However, it lacks products ideal for long-term investing, like real stocks, ETFs, bonds, and mutual funds. It also has limited tools and research for investors.

    What Sets Blueberry Apart?

Blueberry keeps costs at a rock-bottom level, from the tight spreads available across most instruments to the absence of account-related fees. Additionally, it is a crypto-friendly broker with 68 available crypto pairs and multiple crypto deposit options. Responsive 24/7 support and innovative resources like the VIP trading room also distinguish this broker from the crowd.

For this review, I performed my tests with a Standard Account, using the MetaTrader 5 desktop platform and mobile app. The account was opened with the Blueberry (V) Ltd entity. Some features and services may vary depending on where you reside.

    Trust

    3.7
How Did We Test the Broker's Trustworthiness?
Assessing a broker's trustworthiness with your funds is vital. To help you make the right decision, we carefully checked each broker's regulatory license and examined how well they protect traders. Moreover, we looked at the broker's stability by studying their business history, corporate structure, and industry experience. Finally, we thoroughly reviewed all of the broker's legal documentation, including terms, conditions, and fees, and evaluated their transparency based on our analysis. Our hands-on approach ensures that even novice traders have the knowledge they need to make smart decisions.
    trust chart

With an operating history of 8 years, Blueberry is a relatively new player in the CFD industry. It has two entities governed by the VFSC and ASIC, respectively. The offshore entity with limited regulatory oversight dragged the trust score lower. The broker holds client funds in segregated accounts and provides a negative balance protection. My research showed that Blueberry is transparent in key areas like regulation and fees.

Entity Features Blueberry (V) Ltd Blueberry Australia Pty Ltd
    Country/Region Global Australia
Regulation Vanuatu Financial Services Commission (VFSC) Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC)

    Segregated Funds Yes Yes
    Negative Balance Protection Yes Yes
    Compensation Scheme No No
    Maximum Leverage  1:500 1:30

    Blueberry Regulators

In our reviews, we examine the regulatory status of each entity operated by a broker. This allows us to compare the different levels of client protection. We rank regulators using a three-tier system, where Tier-1 licensing reflects the highest level of regulation.

Here are my findings on the entities of Blueberry:

    • Blueberry (V) Ltd is regulated by the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission (VFSC), company number 700697. We rate the VFSC as a Tier 3 regulator.
    • Blueberry Australia Pty Ltd is regulated by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC), ABN 67 646 513 797, AFSL 535887. We rate ASIC as a Tier 1 regulator.

Understanding the Regulatory Protections of Your Account

Brokers operate multiple entities to serve clients globally, yet regulatory protections vary by jurisdiction. Some regulators enforce strict financial standards, while others are more lenient. Traders should understand the protection offered by the entity where they intend to open an account.

    • Segregation of client funds. Keeping client funds in segregated bank accounts from the ones used for the broker’s corporate capital negates the risk of accounting errors. Both Blueberry entities segregate client funds from operational funds.
    • Negative balance protection. This safety mechanism removes the risk of trading losses exceeding the account balance. In other words, the losses you incur from trading are capped at the amount you have put in your trading account. This is especially important in volatile markets. Both Blueberry entities provide negative balance protection.
    • Compensation scheme. A compensation scheme protects retail traders against the broker’s liabilities in the unlikely event that the company becomes insolvent. Neither of Blueberry’s entities offers a compensation fund.
    • Maximum leverage. Capping the maximum leverage restricts the extent of market exposure to retail traders. The higher the leverage, the higher the potential profits and potential losses. The maximum leverage on the Australian entity is 1:30, while the global entity offers leverage of up to 1:500.

    Stability and Transparency

In our tests for the Trust category, we also cover factors relating to stability and transparency. Here, we focus on the broker’s longevity, the company’s size, and transparency in terms of readily available information.

Founded in 2016, Blueberry has a relatively modest operating history. The company’s LinkedIn page lists the number of employees as 51-200, reflecting a small-sized brokerage firm.

While observing the Blueberry website (blueberrymarkets.com) and social media presence, I judged that this broker is highly transparent about its fees, regulatory status, and overall background. Information and materials were clearly laid out and easy to find.

The company’s regulatory status can be viewed in the footer of the website. Information relating to trading costs can be found on the Trading Conditions page. More detailed coverage of margin, commissions, and charges can be found in the Client Agreement on the Legal documentation page.

Is Blueberry Safe to Trade With?

In summary, my findings indicate that Blueberry can be regarded as having a moderate level of trust and stability due to the following factors:

    • 8-year operating history
    • All entities segregate funds
    • All entities provide negative balance protection
    • Transparent in essential areas like fees and regulation
    • Lacks a compensation fund in the event of insolvency

    Fees

    4.8
How Did We Test the Broker's Fees and Commissions?
Broker commissions and fees can be challenging to understand. To simplify this for you, we carefully examined all the broker's fee-related documentation and presented it in a clear, easy-to-understand format. Furthermore, we conducted hands-on tests on spreads and commissions for the most common instruments during both London and New York trading sessions. We then compared these real-time test results to the market benchmark we've established through our extensive experience evaluating the industry.
    fees chart

Blueberry offers better-than-average spreads in most instruments and is exceptional in some asset classes, like indices. The broker does not charge for deposits and withdrawals, and there are no account maintenance or inactivity fees. Swap fees are average for the industry.

I tested the spreads at Blueberry during the London open and just after the New York open on 4 October 2024. At these times, the market is typically highly liquid with the tightest spreads.

I found that spreads in forex were close to the industry average, while commodities, shares, and crypto were more competitive than most CFD brokers. The spreads in indices are especially tight.

    Blueberry Swap Fees

The table below shows the Swap Long (the cost/credit of holding a buy position overnight) and the Swap Short (the cost/credit of maintaining a sell position overnight) for one full-sized contract.

A full-sized contract is 100,000 units of the base currency (the first currency quoted in the pair). I recorded the data on 4 October 2024.

    Instrument Swap Long Swap Short
    EUR/USD Charge of $6.04 Credit of $2.82
    GBP/JPY Credit of $16.08 Charge of $42.42

The values listed below are for one full contract (100,000 units) of the base currency.

My tests showed that spreads at Blueberry are in the standard range for the industry.

    Blueberry Non-Trading Fees

Blueberry does not charge deposit/withdrawal fees or inactivity/account maintenance fees.

    Are Blueberry Fees Competitive?

Overall, I rate the fees at Blueberry as highly competitive for the following reasons:

    • Tighter than average spreads in most instruments
    • Average swap fees
    • No inactivity fees
    • No deposit or withdrawal fees

In my live tests, I used the MetaTrader 5 (MT5) platform. It is available in 52 languages, from Arabic to Vietnamese, and provides popular features such as:

    • Alerts: This feature updates traders when an instrument reaches a specific price level.
    • Watchlists: Traders can create a list of their favorite instruments and follow live quotes in a market watch panel.
    • One-Click Trading: This feature allows traders to execute orders with a single click and no secondary confirmation. This feature enables traders to operate faster and is especially useful for short-term traders.
    • Trading from the Chart: MT5 also allows users the convenience of trading directly from the chart.

Charting features are robust. MetaTrader 5 offers:

    • 38 Technical Indicators: These include classic trend indicators, volume indicators, and oscillators.
    • 44 Analytical Objects: These include lines, channels, Gann, and Fibonacci tools. 21 Time Frames. Traders can choose from many time frames, from one minute to one month.
    • 3 Chart Types: Traders can use Bar Charts, Japanese Candlestick Charts, and Line Charts. MetaTrader is also popular due to its copy trading and automated trading features.

MetaTrader 5 delivers when it comes to the range of available order types. The platform offers the following:

    • Market Order: Traders use market orders to buy or sell an instrument at the best current price.
    • Limit Order: Traders use limit orders to buy or sell an instrument at a specified price or better.
    • Stop-Loss Order: Traders use stop-loss orders to buy or sell an instrument when its price reaches a specified level.
    • Stop-Limit Order: Traders can manage risk more precisely with stop-limit orders, which combine the features of a stop-loss with those of a limit order.
    • Trailing-Stop Order: Traders use trailing stop-loss orders as a stop-loss order at a defined percentage or dollar amount away from an instrument’s current market price. This order type allows traders to secure profits when they are in a winning trade while not having to exit the position.

    MT5 Desktop: My Key Takeaways

The MetaTrader 5 desktop platform is one of the most feature-rich and popular retail trading platforms. However, it may present a steep learning curve for beginners. MT5 offers a greater number of technical indicators, graphical objects, and analytical objects than MT4. It also has great additional features like an economic calendar and market depth (DOM).

Blueberry offers the MetaTrader 5 mobile app for mobile trading, which is available for Android and iOS. The app offers popular features such as alerts, 1-click trading, and trading from the chart.

The MT5 mobile app also provides many order types, including pending and stop orders. However, trailing stop-loss orders are only available from the desktop. To change the language of the MT5 app, you must change the language for your entire phone.

    MT5 App: My Key Takeaways

Overall, the MetaTrader 5 app offers an above-average range of features and I rate it as a well-designed app. I appreciated the wide range of technical indicators and the option of trading from the chart for fast order entry on the move.

    Blueberry Order Execution Model

Blueberry operates under the Principle Model of brokerage. This means it is the counterparty to all client trades. It acts as a market maker, setting the prices at which it is prepared to deal with clients. To allow Blueberry to have a completely neutral position and limited internal risk, it may enter into an agreement with hedging counterparties immediately after clients place a trade.

    Tradable Instruments

    4.7
How Did We Test the Broker's Tradable Instruments?
For this section, we examined the broker's market offering, assessing the variety and depth of instruments and asset classes available for trading. Through our proprietary database, we then compared the results with other brokers. This comprehensive analysis allows you to determine if the broker offers the specific instruments and trading options you're looking for.
    tradable_instruments chart

Blueberry offers an excellent range of 1,300+ tradable instruments, including forex, indices, commodities, shares, and crypto. Commodities like gold can be traded against different currencies. Among CFDs on shares, clients have access to an outstanding variety of global exchanges.

Blueberry offers a slightly above-average selection of forex pairs and excels in indices and cryptocurrencies. It has strong coverage of metals in commodities but lacks agricultural options.

The variety of global shares is impressive, with securities from major exchanges such as the Australian Securities Exchange, NASDAQ, London Stock Exchange, New York Stock Exchange, Euronext Paris, Madrid Stock Exchange, and Deutsche Börse Xetra.

    What are CFDs?

A Contract for Difference (CFD) is an agreement specifying that the buyer must pay the seller the difference between an asset’s current value and its value at the time the contract was initiated. Like futures and other derivative financial instruments, CFDs allow traders to speculate on price movements without owning the underlying asset.

What Can You Trade with Blueberry?

To better illustrate the range of instruments available at Blueberry, the following tables show samples from various asset classes:

    Forex Majors Forex Minors
    EUR/USD | USD/JPY | USD/CHF AUD/NZD | EUR/SEK | NOK/SEK

    Blueberry Instruments: My Key Takeaways

    Customer Support

    4.6
How Did We Test the Broker's Customer Support?
Traders often underestimate the importance of customer support, yet it proves to be a critical aspect during times of crisis. We put the broker's customer support to the test ourselves using all possible channels, such as chat, phone, and others. Our evaluation focused on the accessibility of live agents, as well as the helpfulness and professionalism of their responses. This way, we provide you with comprehensive insights into whether a broker can deliver full support when you need it most.
    customer_support chart

Blueberry offers 24/7 support via phone, live chat, and email. I received quick responses via chat and email, though agents sometimes struggled with my questions. However, I always got a satisfactory answer in the end. Overall, I had a positive experience over my two-week testing period, and I rate Blueberry support as above average for the industry.

    Blueberry Customer Support Test

Support is a key component of a broker’s offering – whether you are a new trader looking for guidance on how to use the platform or an experienced trader who needs help fast to exit their positions in the event of a technical glitch.

I tested support at Blueberry over the phone, live chat, and email, with multiple inquiries. Agents were not always very well versed in CFD industry terminology but did their best to help.

With live chat, you have to go through a series of automated questions before reaching an operator, but after doing so, I found that you can reliably reach a live agent. I received replies to emails within one day.

My overall impression was that Blueberry offers personalized support with reliable agents. Sometimes it took a couple of tries to get the info I was looking for, but in the end, I was always able to get a satisfactory response.

One of the reasons that traders are attracted to the forex and CFD markets is the high degree of available leverage. Leverage is the use of borrowed funds to increase the size of your trading positions beyond what would be possible using only the cash in your account.

For the Blueberry (V) Ltd. entity, the maximum leverage is 1:500. This means that with an account of $1,000, you can control up to $500,000 worth of positions in the market. This is an unusually high level of leverage and very risky to use.

Leverage is often described as a ‘double-edged sword’ as it can hurt you as much as it helps you. Traders should keep in mind that it can amplify both their profits and their losses.

Leverage varies by asset class, as illustrated in the following table:

    Asset Class Maximum Available Leverage
    Forex  1:500
    Metals 1:500
    Energies 1:500
    Indices 1:200
    Cryptocurrencies 1:10
    Shares 1:5

How Did We Test the Broker's Research Tools?
Research options offered by brokers may not be seen as the most important feature for some traders, but they can provide a competitive advantage. To assess the broker's research offerings, we personally explored and tested both proprietary and third-party tools and content, such as Fundamental and Technical Analysis, Market News, educational videos, and webinars. After evaluating the availability and quality of the overall research offering, we compared the results with our benchmark to provide a comprehensive analysis of the broker's research capabilities.

While the written analysis via the website needs updating, I was impressed overall by the research resources available. The video content on YouTube is high-quality and insightful. The Bottom Line

Blueberry is regulated by top-tier ASIC and offshore VFSC. With eight years of experience, it is a relatively young broker. It offers highly competitive fees, with tight spreads and minimal account-related charges. I was impressed by its well-rounded selection of tradable instruments, particularly its robust range of cryptocurrency pairs.

I found Blueberry to be a user-centric broker, attentive to the needs of its client base. It offers features like an interactive VIP trading room, solid customer support, and diverse educational materials.

Blueberry could improve by updating the analysis on its website and adding a proprietary platform. Due to the limited regulatory oversight of the offshore entity, trust was the weakest category. Private insurance could improve this by protecting client accounts in the event of insolvency.

Overall, I rate Blueberry as a promising and innovative player in the CFD industry with an attractive offering for both beginners and experienced traders.

Margin trading involves a high level of risk and is not suitable for everyone. You should carefully consider your objectives, financial situation, needs and level of experience before entering into any margined transactions with Blueberry Markets, and seek independent advice if necessary. Margin Forex and CFDs are highly leveraged products, which means both gains and losses are magnified. You should only trade in these products if you fully understand the risks involved and can afford to incur losses.
