Founded in 2022, Headway is a global CFD broker based in the city of East London, South Africa. Clients can access trading in CFDs on forex, indices, commodities, shares, and crypto via the MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms.
The Standard Account offers spreads ranging from competitive to wider than average, while the Pro account features spreads starting from 0.0 pips. Headway stands out from the crowd with its proprietary copy trading platform, mobile app, and products like tokenized real estate.
With responsive chat support, demo accounts, and a forex course, Headway is a beginner-friendly broker. Thanks to the feature-rich MetaTrader platforms, fast order execution, and a raw spreads account, Headway can accommodate day traders, scalpers, and algo traders.

When reviewing a broker, we assess its suitability for implementing various trading strategies. To achieve this, we evaluate the availability of features and tools necessary for executing specific strategies. Here is our verdict for Headway:
Headway caters well to market newbies and casual traders with features like low-risk micro-lot trading, helpful educational materials, responsive support, and demo accounts. While the MetaTrader desktop platforms take time to master, the MT5 web platform is more intuitive for beginners.
Headway offers its own copy trading platform, which can be accessed via the client portal or mobile app. Clients can easily copy the trades of experienced traders or offer their own activity for others to copy.
Headway offers a range of popular markets for swing trading, including 250+ shares from US, German, and Brazilian exchanges. However, real shares and ETFs are not available. The broker’s overnight swap fees are average for the industry.
MetaTrader 4 and 5 offer one-click trading and the ability to trade directly from charts – essential features for active traders who frequently enter and exit the market. However, spreads on some instruments are relatively wide, which can make frequent trading more costly.
Scalpers, who are in and out of the market within seconds, can benefit from fast order execution and tools like depth-of-market (DOM) in MetaTrader 5. However, Headway lacks VPS hosting for optimal execution speed and uptime.
MT5 features a built-in economic calendar, which helps traders stay on top of news without leaving the platform. However, Headway does not offer analysis of economic events and real-time news coverage.
Headway offers MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 platforms, which enable strategy backtesting and automated trading via expert advisors (EAs). However, VPS hosting, which enhances trade execution speed and protects against power and internet outages, is not provided.
Headway offers an innovative investment product called NOVA, enabling clients to invest in tokenized property from global markets with as little as 50 USD. However, it lacks popular products ideal for long-term investing, like real stocks, ETFs, bonds, and mutual funds.
During my review, Headway stood out with its super simple registration process and intuitive client portal. I also noted that it is a crypto-friendly broker with many tradable pairs and deposit and withdrawal options in crypto. While it does not offer a proprietary trading platform, it provides copy trading and unique products like tokenized real estate.
For this review, I performed my tests with a Standard Account, using the MetaTrader 5 desktop platform and mobile app. The account was opened with the Jarocel Pty Ltd entity. Some features and services may vary depending on where you reside.

Launched in 2022, Headway is a newcomer to the CFD industry. It has one entity, which is authorized and regulated by the FSCA in South Africa. Headway provides negative balance protection and segregates client funds from its own. I rated the broker as being transparent in key areas like fees and regulation.

In our reviews, we examine the regulatory status of each entity operated by a broker. This allows us to compare the different levels of client protection. We rank regulators using a three-tier system, where Tier-1 licensing reflects the highest level of regulation.
Here are my findings on Headway’s only entity:
Brokers operate multiple entities to serve clients globally, yet regulatory protections vary by jurisdiction. Some regulators enforce strict financial standards, while others are more lenient. Traders should understand the protection offered by the entity where they intend to open an account.
In our tests for the Trust category, we also cover factors relating to stability and transparency. Here, we focus on the broker’s length of service, size, and transparency in terms of readily available information.
Founded in 2022, Headway has a short operating history. The company’s LinkedIn page lists the number of employees as 51-200, reflecting a small-sized brokerage firm.
While reviewing the website (hw.online) and social media presence, I judged that Headway has a fair level of transparency relating to its fees and regulatory status, as well as the overall background of the company. Information and materials like legal documents were relatively easy to find, and some of them are also translated into 9 local languages..
The company’s regulatory status can be viewed in the website’s footer. Information relating to trading costs can be found on the Account Types page. The nitty gritty account-related details can be found in the legal documents on the About Us page.
To summarize, my findings led to a relatively low trust score due to the following factors:
Among the positive points supporting Headway:
Headway offers competitive spreads in some popular markets like EUR/USD and gold, but the majority of instruments I tested ranged from average to wider than average. Lower trading costs can be found on the raw-spread Pro account. There are no account maintenance or inactivity fees, and swap fees are average for the industry.
I tested the spreads at Headway during the London open and just after the New York open on 16 December 2024. At these times, the market is typically highly liquid with the tightest spreads.
Instrument | Live spread AM | Live spread PM | Industry Average |
EUR/USD | 0.9 Pips | 0.8 Pips | 1.08 Pips |
GBP/JPY | 3.9 Pips | 3.8 Pips | 2.44 Pips |
Spot Gold | 35 Cents | 32 Cents | 25 Cents |
WTI Oil | 6 Cents | 6 Cents | 3 Cents |

Dow Jones 30 | 2.5 Pips | 2.5 Pips | 3.3 Pips |
Bitcoin | $30.10 | $30.10 | $35.5 |
My tests showed a mixed picture. Spreads are competitive in the popular EUR/USD pair, shares, indices, and Bitcoin. Meanwhile, I found room for improvement in some assets among minor forex pairs and commodities.
The table below shows the Swap Long (the cost/credit of holding a buy position overnight) and the Swap Short (the cost/credit of maintaining a sell position overnight) for one full-sized contract.
A full-sized contract is 100,000 units of the base currency (the first currency quoted in the pair). I recorded the data on 28 October 2024.
The values listed below are for one full contract (100,000 units) of the base currency.
Instrument | Swap Long | Swap Short |
EUR/USD | Charge of $6.33 | Credit of $1.46 |
GBP/JPY | Credit of $15.20 | Charge of $41.20 |
My tests indicated that Headway’s swap fees are standard for the industry.
Headway does not charge any account maintenance or inactivity fees. Additionally, the broker covers all the handling fees for deposits and withdrawals.
Overall, I rate the fees at Headway as mixed for the following reasons:
Headway provides the popular MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 for desktop, web, and mobile. The desktop platforms can cater to advanced traders and those employing automated strategies. Headway also provides its own copy trading platform and a mobile app enabling copy trading and deposits/withdrawals on the go.
Platform/Tool | Suitable For |
---|---|
MetaTrader 4 (Desktop, Web) | Experienced Traders, Day Trading, Scalping, Algo Trading, MAM/PAMM, Trading Signals |
MetaTrader 5 (Desktop, Web) | Experienced Traders, Day Trading, Scalping, Algo Trading, MAM/PAMM, Trading Signals |
MetaTrader App | Mobile trading, day trading, swing trading, account management |
Headway App | Copy trading, deposits/withdrawals, chat support, trading via MT4/MT5 within the app |
Headway Copy Trading Platform | Copying and sharing trading strategies |
In my live tests, I used the MetaTrader 5 (MT5) platform. It is available in 52 languages, from Arabic to Vietnamese, and provides popular features such as:
The MarketWatch panel enables traders to stay on top of their favorite instruments at a glance.
The Toolbox panel allows traders to track their open positions, market exposure, trade history, and profit/loss figures in real time.
Charting features are robust. MetaTrader 5 offers:
MetaTrader 5 delivers when it comes to the range of available order types. The platform offers the following:
The MetaTrader 5 desktop platform is one of the most feature-rich and popular retail trading platforms. However, it may present a steep learning curve for beginners. MT5 offers a greater number of technical indicators, graphical objects, and analytical objects than MT4. It also has great additional features like an economic calendar and market depth (DOM).
From the client portal, traders can easily access the MetaTrader 5 WebTrader platform. The MT5 web platform differs greatly from the desktop and has a more user-friendly interface.
It allows you to trade without any additional software – only an internet connection is required. The Web Platform allows users to trade directly from any browser and operating system.
Popular features of the WebTrader platform include:
Watchlists provide real-time updates for a selected list of instruments.
Charting via the WebTrader platform is outstanding. Traders can make use of:
One of my favorite features of the MT5 WebTrader platform is the ability to overlay economic events on your chart. This allows you to easily stay on top of key market-moving data so that a major economic release will never surprise you.
Headway offers the MetaTrader 5 mobile app for mobile trading, which is available for Android and iOS. The app offers popular features such as alerts, one-click trading, and trading from the chart.
The MT5 mobile app also provides many order types, including pending and stop orders. However, trailing stop-loss orders are only available from the desktop. To change the language of the MT5 app, you must change the language for your entire phone.
Overall, the MetaTrader 5 app offers an above-average range of features, and I rate it as a well-designed app. I appreciated the wide selection of technical indicators and the option of trading from the chart for fast order entry on the move.
The Headway mobile app is available for Android and iOS and offers features like copy trading, live chat support, and deposits and withdrawals while you are on the go. You can also log in to MT5 mobile from within the Headway app and trade both live and demo accounts. I rate the app as intuitive and beginner-friendly.
The Headway copy trading platform can be accessed from the client portal, and users can easily register as investors or traders.
Here’s how it works: a trader publishes a live account, also called a strategy, sets a commission for copying, and trades according to their plan. Investors are users who copy the strategy, pay a commission, and make or lose money based on its outcome.
When browsing strategies to copy, traders can view metrics like percentage gain or loss, win rate, and the number of copying investors. Strategies can also be filtered by platform (MT4 or MT5), risk level, and commission. I rate the platform as intuitive, but I noted that the number of available strategies is still relatively limited.
Market execution is applied for all trading instruments, and client orders are executed at the current price within fractions of a second. As a CFD broker, Headway operates under the Principle Model of brokerage, which means it is the counterparty to all client trades.
Headway offers over 380 tradable instruments, including forex, indices, commodities, shares, and crypto. Indonesian instruments are well represented among shares, indices, and FX pairs. Clients have access to a good range of global markets, but the offering could be improved by adding instruments like CFDs on bonds and ETFs.
Instrument | Number | Type | Industry Average |
Forex Pairs | 57 | Major, Minor, Exotic | 30–75 |
Commodities | 6 | Metals, Energies | 5–10 |
Indices | 34 | US, UK, European, Asian and Australian | 5–10 |
Stocks | 263 | US and global exchanges | 200–300 |
Cryptocurrencies | 21 | Major and Minor | 10–20 |
I rate the range of tradable instruments as mostly average for the industry. Among indices, it includes a wide range of Indonesian sectors.
Crypto is an area of strength, with Bitcoin offered against various currencies and metals, for example, BTC/THB (Bitcoin vs. Thai Baht) and BTC/XAG (Bitcoin vs. Silver). The range of commodities could be improved by adding agricultural instruments like soybeans and coffee.
A Contract for Difference (CFD) is an agreement specifying that the buyer must pay the seller the difference between an asset’s current value and its value at the time the contract was initiated. Like futures and other derivative financial instruments, CFDs allow traders to speculate on price movements without owning the underlying asset.
To better illustrate the range of instruments available at Headway, the following tables show samples from various asset classes:
Forex Major | Forex Minor |
EUR/USD | USD/CHF | USD/JPY | GBP/CHF | EUR/AUD | GBP/JPY |
Forex Exotic | Metals |
DKK/JPY | [2] | [3] | Gold | Silver |
Energies | Indices |
WTI Crude Oil | Brent Crude Oil | Natural Gas | AUS200 | STOXX50 | NASDAQ100 |
Shares | Crypto |
Netflix | Walmart | Intel | Solana | Bitcoin | Polkadot |
Headway offers a diverse range of global markets, but there is certainly room to deepen the offering and add additional assets like bonds. In my opinion, the range of instruments is especially good for crypto enthusiasts and Indonesian traders, with the wide range of local sector indices available.
Headway offers 24/7 support via live chat and email. Phone support is not available. Response times via chat were within seconds, and email responses were also fast. Agents could answer simple questions but struggled with more complex inquiries.
Support is a key component of a broker’s offering – whether you are a new trader looking for guidance on how to use the platform or an experienced trader who needs help fast to exit their positions in the event of a technical glitch.
I tested support at Headway via live chat and email, with multiple inquiries over 2 weeks. Agents could answer basic questions like whether there is an inactivity fee but were unfamiliar with CFD industry themes like segregated funds.
With live chat, you must enter your name and email before reaching an operator, but after doing so, I found that you can quickly reach a live agent. Chat support’s response time was better than average for the industry, and I received replies to emails within 24 hours.
While Headway lacks phone support, you can contact its customer service via WhatsApp and Telegram.
Headway offers a range of payment and withdrawal methods, including credit card, electronic payment systems, and crypto. Deposits are free but there is a charge for withdrawals via credit card. Payments are processed fast. Headway is strong for crypto deposits/withdrawals but could improve by adding a wider range of methods.
Method | Fees | Processing Time |
Visa/Mastercard | 0% | 15 to 30 minutes |
Tether | 0% | 15 to 30 minutes |
Litecoin | 0% | 15 to 30 minutes |
Bitcoin | 0% | 15 to 30 minutes |
Ethereum | 0% | 15 to 30 minutes |
Dogecoin | 0% | 15 to 30 minutes |
Deposits are quick and easy, with no fees applied.
Method | Fees | Processing Time |
Visa/Mastercard | $10 | Immediate |
Perfect Money | 0% | Immediate |
Tether | 0% | Immediate |
Litecoin | 0% | Immediate |
Bitcoin | 0% | Immediate |
Ethereum | 0% | Immediate |
Dogecoin | 0% | Immediate |
Withdrawals are also processed fast, and while crypto and Perfect Money do not incur a fee, clients should be conscious of the withdrawal fee via credit card.
Headway has three main account types – Cent, Standard, and Pro – catering to beginners, intermediate, and experienced traders. Demo and swap-free Islamic accounts are also available. The registration process is extremely simple.
To register for an account, clients must simply provide their name and email and create a password. Once this is done, clients can access the client portal and set up live and demo accounts.
To make a deposit via credit card, clients must verify their identity with a national ID and list their date of birth and address.

The Cent account allows beginners to get started with as little as $1 and trade in relatively low-risk micro lots. The Standard Account reflects all costs in the spread, while the Pro account offers lower costs with raw spreads from 0.0 pips plus a commission, making it the best fit for experienced, active traders.
Headway offers free demo accounts that can be used via MetaTrader 4 and 5 platforms.
Demo accounts are especially important for beginners as they allow them to practice their strategies and get comfortable with the trading platform without risking real money.
The demo account features live quotes and simulates live market conditions in assets like CFDs on forex, commodities, indices, shares, and crypto. Once users are up to speed on a demo, they can easily switch to a live account.
Headway offers a swap-free account that adheres to the principles of Sharia law.
One of the reasons that traders are attracted to the forex and CFD markets is the high degree of available leverage. Leverage is the use of borrowed funds to increase the size of your trading positions beyond what would be possible using only the cash in your account.
The maximum leverage at headway is 1:Unlimited for accounts of up to $1,000. This means that with an account of $1,000 or less, you can control an unlimited size of positions in the market. This presents an extremely high level of risk.
Leverage is often described as a ‘double-edged sword’ as it can hurt you as much as it helps you. Traders should keep in mind that it can amplify both their profits and their losses.
Leverage varies by asset class, as illustrated in the following table:
Asset Class | Maximum Available Leverage |
Forex | 1:Unlimited |
Metals | 1:Unlimited |
Energies | 1:200 |
Indices | 1:400 |
Cryptocurrencies | 1:400 |
Shares | 1:20 |
It’s important to note that Headway reserves the right to change the leverage of a client’s account at any time, as outlined below:
Account Balance | Maximum Leverage |
0 – $1,000 | Unlimited (after trading 5 standard lots on a real account) or up to 1:2000 |
$1,001 – $5,000 | up to 1:2000 |
$5,001 – $20,000 | up to 1:1000 |
$20,001 – $30,000 | up to 1:800 |
$30,001 – $50,000 | up to 1:600 |
$50,001 – $80,000 | up to 1:400 |
$80,001 – $100,000 | up to 1:300 |
> $100,001 | up to 1:200 |
Headway Inc. does not offer its services to residents of countries that were, are, or will be blacklisted by the FATF.
Headway provides some market research on its website, with reports covering fundamental themes such as central bank policy and a range of markets, including forex, gold, and crypto. While I found Headway’s research articles to be insightful, they are quite limited in number.
The Forex News section covers central bank policy and provides forecasts based on different interest rate scenarios and how they may impact the market.
Headway also provides interesting coverage of the crypto markets, including analysis of fundamental themes such as the potential impact of U.S. elections on cryptocurrency regulation.
My assessment showed that Headway provides a limited range of research materials and could improve by offering more coverage of major news events and a higher volume of analysis reports.
Headway offers a robust education section featuring a forex course, educational guides, and platform tutorials. Both text-based and video content are available. I rate the quality and volume of the content as better than average for the industry, but the content is mainly geared toward beginners.
The education section features actionable trading strategies, which are helpful to new traders finding their feet in the market. Other articles cover basics like order types, while some touch on more advanced topics like backtesting automated trading strategies.
The ‘Forex for Beginners’ course includes modules on basic concepts, technical and fundamental analysis, and specific chart patterns. The content includes plenty of images to illustrate points and does a good job of explaining basic concepts like trend lines. The course also includes interactive quizzes to aid the learning process.
Headway also offers a range of useful video-based platform tutorials on the Headway YouTube channel to help traders learn MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5.
Headway is regulated by the South African FSCA and has just two years of experience, marking it as a relatively new broker. It offers a solid range of tradable instruments, with a better-than-average variety of indices and crypto pairs.
The onboarding process at Headway is extremely fast, and the intuitive client portal makes it a breeze to set up live and demo trading accounts. Trading costs were mixed in my tests, but I noted competitive spreads in popular instruments like EUR/USD and DAX 40.
The research offering could be improved with a greater volume of analysis materials and better coverage of news events. In contrast, the educational section performs better than average, offering courses, practical trading strategies, and platform tutorial videos. I felt that Headway’s well-designed copy trading platform and mobile app also deserve credit. Overall, I rate Headway’s services as most suitable for beginners and casual traders.
