In Bangladesh, the most important categories in the consumer price index are food, non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco (59 percent of the total weight) and gross rent, fuel and lighting (16.9 percent). The index also includes: clothing and footwear (6.9 percent); transport and communication (4.2 percent), recreation, entertainment, education & cultural services (4.1 percent); miscellaneous goods and services (3.6 percent); medical care and health expenses (2.8 percent) and furnishing (2.7 percent).

The annual inflation rate in Bangladesh edged higher to 9.35% in March 2025 from a near two-year low of 9.32% in the previous month. Prices increased at a faster pace for transport (6.69% vs 6.15% in February), clothing and footwear (14.7% vs 10.33%), furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (8.52% vs 8.2%), health (4.77% vs 4.28%), communication (9.65% vs 9.49%), recreation and culture (7.72% vs 6.79%), and restaurants and hotels (12% vs 11.96%). On the other hand, costs moderated for food and non-alcoholic beverages (8.93% vs 9.24%), housing and utilities (8.21% vs 8.67%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (23.43% vs 25.97%), and miscellaneous goods and services (12.3% vs 13.62%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices climbed 1.29% in March 2025, rebounding from a 0.15% fall in the previous month and the most since October 2024.
