Brazil posted a nominal budget deficit of BRL 80.4 billion in December 2024, down from BRL 193.4 billion in the same month of the previous year but larger than an expected BRL 60.3 billion shortfall. The central government gap shrank to BRL 60.7 billion from BRL 182.3 billion in December 2023, and the state-owned companies' surplus was little changed at BRL 0.6 billion. Conversely, the regional governments' shortfall rose to BRL 20.2 billion from BRL 11.8 billion. Meanwhile, the country's government debt as a share of the GDP fell significantly to 76.1% in December from 77.7% in the month before and below market forecasts of 77%, driven by the central bank's sale of foreign exchange reserves.
