Georgia's increasing trade deficits are a by-product of Russia's trade embargo. Georgia has failed to diversify its exports and relies heavily on agriculture and low value added resource exploration. Georgia's main imports are oil, motor cars, pharmaceutical products, wheat and meslin, sugar and electrical equipment. Georgia's trade deficit narrowed to USD 671.9 million in February 2025 from USD 716.9 million in the same month of the previous year, according to preliminary estimates. This marked the smallest trade deficit since March 2023. Year-on-year, exports fell by 7.1% to USD 431.5 million, while imports declined by 6.6% to USD 1,103.4 million. In the first two months of the year, the country's trade deficit widened to USD 1,896.9 million compared to USD 1,343.5 million in the same period last year, as exports rose by 4.0% and imports surged by 19.6%.
