Hungary's main exports are machinery and transport equipment, consumer goods, agricultural products, chemicals, apparel, textiles, iron and steel, and wine. Hungary's major imports are machinery and equipment, other manufactures and fuels and electricity. European Union is by far its largest trading partner, accounting for about 79% of exports and 76% of imports.

Hungary's trade surplus narrowed sharply to EUR 167 million in July 2024 from EUR 565 million in the corresponding month of the previous year, below the preliminary estimates of EUR 203 million. This marked the seventh consecutive month of trade surplus but the smallest reading since May 2021, as imports grew 8.8% from a year earlier to EUR 11,648 million, while exports rose at a softer 4.8% to EUR 11,815 million. The share of EU member states was 74% of exports and 70% of imports. Considering the January to July period, the country’s trade surplus was recorded at EUR 7,937 million.
