In Japan, Foreign Exchange Reserves are the foreign assets held or controlled by the country central bank. The reserves are made of gold or a specific currency. They can also be special drawing rights and marketable securities denominated in foreign currencies like treasury bills, government bonds, corporate bonds and equities and foreign currency loans.

Japan’s foreign reserves increased by $49 million, reaching a total of $1.24 trillion in November 2024. The reserves were composed of several components: foreign currency reserves ($1.08 trillion), the IMF reserve position ($10.28 billion), Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) ($57.57 billion), gold reserves ($72.11 billion), and other reserve assets ($15.26 billion). In a recent disclosure, Japan's finance ministry revealed it spent 5.53 trillion yen in July for foreign exchange interventions aimed at supporting the yen.
