In Japan, Foreign Exchange Reserves are the foreign assets held or controlled by the country central bank. The reserves are made of gold or a specific currency. They can also be special drawing rights and marketable securities denominated in foreign currencies like treasury bills, government bonds, corporate bonds and equities and foreign currency loans.

Japan’s foreign reserves increased by $9.92 billion to $1.24 trillion in January 2025, hitting the highest level since September last year. Total reserve assets were broken down into foreign currency reserves ($1.08 trillion), IMF reserve position ($10,137 million), SDRs ($57,221 million), gold ($76,485 million) and other reserve assets ($15,421 million). In a recent disclosure, Japan's finance ministry revealed it conducted no foreign exchange intervention operations for the period from October through December 2024.
