In Kazakhstan, industrial production measures the output of businesses integrated in industrial sector of the economy. Mining and quarrying is the most important sector and accounts for 50 percent of total production. The biggest segment within mining is crude petroleum and natural gas extraction. Manufacturing accounts for 40 percent. The biggest segments within manufacturing are: metallurgy (15 percent); food production (7 percent) and mechanical engineering (4 percent). Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply accounts for 8 percent of total output and water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation for 1 percent.

Industrial production in Kazakhstan rose by 2.3% year-on-year in January 2024, easing from a 3.8% increase in the previous month. This marked the third consecutive month of growth in industrial activity but the softest pace in the sequence, as output sharply slowed for manufacturing (3.7% vs 12.4% in December). At the same time, production declined for both electricity, gas, steam, hot water, & air conditioning (-0.7% vs 4.2%) and water supply and waste management (-5.6% vs -0.6%). Meanwhile, activity recovered for mining and quarrying (1.3% vs -3.9%). On a monthly basis, industrial output dropped by 13.8%, slipping from a 7.9% rise in the prior period.
