Romania's trade deficit increased to EUR 3.72 billion in October 2024 from EUR 2.80 billion in the same month of the previous year, mainly due to a surge in imports. Purchases rose by 8.6% year-on-year to a record high of EUR 12.17 billion, driven by higher orders from both EU (6.4%) and non-EU (14.5%) countries. Meanwhile, exports edged up by 0.5% to EUR 8.45 billion, primarily supported by a 3.3% increase in sales to non-EU countries as shipments to the EU fell by 0.5%. For the first ten months of the year, the country’s trade gap stood at EUR 27.21 billion, with exports falling by 1.2% from the corresponding period in 2023 while imports increased by 3.0%.
