Japan's industrial production dropped by 1.1% month-over-month in January 2025, slightly exceeding market estimates of a 1.0% fall, according to flash data. This decline followed a 0.2% decrease in the previous month, marking the third consecutive month of falling industrial output. Industries that mainly contributed to the contraction were production machinery (-12.3% vs 2.8% in December), electronic parts and devices (-5.4% vs 2.0%), and electrical machinery, and information and communication electronics equipment (-5.1% vs 0.2%).
Year-on-year, industrial production grew by 2.6%, swinging from a 1.6% fall in December and representing the first growth in three months.
