Latest Updates
The National Bank of Romania kept its benchmark interest rate at 6.5% in February 2025, as expected, to maintain price stability and support sustainable growth amid uncertainties from global issues and fiscal policies. In December 2024, annual inflation rose to 5.14%, driven by higher fuel and food prices amid a severe drought and rising commodity costs. Adjusted core inflation remained at 5.6% in Q4, with mixed influences from base effects, food price hikes, and wage increases. Inflation decreased overall in 2024, dropping 1.47 percentage points from December 2023. The average CPI inflation rate fell to 5.6% from 10.4%, and the HICP inflation rate dropped to 5.5%. In January 2025, inflation continued to decline to 4.95%. Economic growth accelerated in Q4 2024, but trade and current account deficits widened. The labor market showed improvement with lower unemployment.
