In Sweden, because new orders heavily affect business confidence they are a leading indicator for growth in gross domestic product. The statistics is sample- and register-based and aims to measure short-term changes in new orders and turnover in industry on a monthly basis, in total and by industry, as well as domestic and export market. The survey is coordinated with other economy-based surveys.

Total orders received by Swedish industry surged by 16.7% year-on-year in January 2025, accelerating from a 5.8% gain in the previous month and marking the third consecutive month of increase. Orders from the foreign market jumped strongly (30.2% vs 17.0% in December), while domestic demand fell much slower (-2.3% vs -11.5%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, new orders grew by 2.0%, slowing slightly from an upwardly revised 2.2% rise in December, representing the softest gain since last October. In 2024, total orders received by Swedish industry shrank by 2.9% compared to the previous year, due to a 1.3% drop in the foreign market and a 5.5% decline in the domestic market.
