In the United Kingdom, construction output measures the yearly change in the amount charged by construction companies to customers for value of work. The value is based on the sample of 8,000 businesses, employing over 100 people or with an annual turnover of more than £60 million. Construction estimates are a component of GDP from the production approach, contributing approximately 6.4% of GDP.
Latest Updates
UK construction output rose by 0.2% year-on-year in January 2025, missing market expectations of 0.4% and slowing sharply from 1.5% in the previous month. While marking a sixth consecutive month of increase, it was the weakest growth since last October, weighed down by subdued new work (0.1% vs 1.9%) and a slowdown in repair and maintenance activity (0.4% vs 1.0%). On a monthly basis, construction output contracted by 0.2%, matching December’s decline. The drop was primarily driven by a 0.7% fall in new work, reversing a 1.1% gain in the previous month, while repair and maintenance rebounded 0.4% after a 1.8% decline in December. Sector-wise, three out of nine categories saw declines, with private commercial new work (-6.1%) and private housing new work (-1.8%) being the biggest drags.
