New car registrations in the United Kingdom surged 12.4% year-on-year to 357,103 units in March 2025, marking the first annual increase since September 2024, as private retail buyers gradually returned to the market. Private sales rebounded by 14.5% after last year’s sluggish performance, while fleet registrations rose 11.5%. In contrast, business purchases dipped slightly by 0.3%. Electrified vehicles saw strong growth across all categories, driven by manufacturer incentives and significant discounts. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) sales jumped 27.7%, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) surged 37.9%, and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) soared 43.2%. March set a new record for electric car registrations, with BEVs alone making up 19.4% of the market. Meanwhile, traditional fuel vehicles declined, with petrol sales slipping 0.4% and diesel plunging 10.1%.
